How to choose a guardian

Choosing a guardian for your children is one of the most significant decisions you can make as a parent. It is not something most people think about often, but it deserves deliberate thought rather than assumptions about what might happen.

This decision is about more than who you trust. It is about whether the arrangement would work in practice, for your children and for the people you are asking to take on that role.

Make a List

Start by listing potential guardians, including both family members and close friends. Think about who you trust and who has a good relationship with your children.

  • Pros and cons: Write down the strengths and weaknesses of each person on your list.
  • Values and beliefs: Consider if their values and beliefs align with yours.
  • Age and health: Think about their age and health. Are they physically capable of taking care of your children?
  • Parenting style: Reflect on their parenting style. Is it similar to yours?
  • Existing family circumstances: Look at their current family situation. Do they have children of their own? How would your children fit in?
  • Finances: It is worth considering whether your chosen guardians could realistically take this on financially. Many parents choose to put a plan in place, so support is provided from their estate, to help with expenses.
  • Location: Consider where they live. Is it a place where your children would be happy and comfortable?

Discuss with the Chosen Guardian

  • Once you have someone in mind, talk to them openly about the role and what support would be available. Guardianship should never come as a surprise!

Make it Legal

  • Update your Will to include your chosen guardian. This makes your decision legally binding.
  • Review and update your guardianship choice every few years, as circumstances can change.
